When Christine Consiglio was born with a congenital heart ailment, her doctors didn't expect her to live past the age of 15. At 15, Christine received a pacemaker to regulate the rhythm of her heart and doctors made a second prediction-Christine wouldn't live to see her 21st birthday.
"Now that I'm 25 they don't say anything," Christine says, and she attributes her survival to both her passion for life and the fact that she was able to make her career dream of becoming a master hair and fashion designer come true.
Because of her heart condition, doctors attempted to steer Christine away from a hairdressing career, warning that she could not stand for long hours, overwork her body, or be exposed to the harsh chemicals used in the profession.
"My mom and my dad said it would have been so cruel not to let me do hair because of how much I loved it," Christine recalls.
Defying the odds-and her doctors' warnings-has enabled Christine to realize her professional dream; today she owns CRC Styles in East Haven.
Two years ago Christine launched her first Fashion Show Gala to raise money for the American Heart Association. This year-with the founding of the aptly named Christine Rose Consiglio Foundation-Christine will operate the third annual Fashion Show Gala on Sept. 11, the proceeds of which will benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
Christine chose Make-A-Wish because of what the organization did for her.
"They sponsored a trip to Hawaii for me and my family," Christine says.
Now it's Christine's chance to begin granting wishes and her strident efforts to garner support have attracted over a dozen sponsors-from high-profile photographers to clothing shops to modeling agencies-and it's taken Christine and her dedicated team of volunteers a year to put the upcoming program together.
Running the annual Fashion Show Gala may be a labor of love for Christine, but it's what her heart tells her she must do.
"I enjoy people and I enjoy making people feel happy and joyful inside," Christine says. "I want to help make others' wishes come true."
